The title of the collection recalls an Eng. Lit. lecturer, long
ago, who interrupted our tutorial to exclaim, But of course
you’ve never heard the nightingale, have you? You’re from
Scotland! Yes, I am, and no, I haven’t. But there are woods
to walk, voices to hear, stories to remember, even in places
where there are no nightingales; hence these poems.
